Broadway and Me: NYC Fall 2012

Hello LilyOnTheLam.Com Readers:

One of my friend's daughters recently turned 15 years old.  She posted on my Facebook.com page that she was saving her money so I could take her to New York City.  I did a double-take ... I know my attention span rivals a flea with ADHD, but I think I would have remembered any conversation where I had agreed to chaperone a teenager in NYC.  I think my friend's daughter is practicing some psychological tricks - "say it often enough and it becomes reality."   Maybe I should start telling everyone I won the lottery -- I would like that to be my reality.

I do like New York City very much and I have played tour guide to both my sister's first trip as well as one of my friends ("Little Jen") when we were both much younger.  But evidently, I have signed up to be some sort of teenage tour guide.  I told my friend's daughter to save up a lot of money and maybe in 2013 or 2014 I'd take her.  NYC is not cheap!

I grew up very poor so extravagant vacations and Broadway shows were never in my childhood memories.  Now that I am an adult, I do pamper myself from time to time (my friends may say its a bit more than that ... a lot more than that ... a significant amount more than that ... a ton.)

I try to make it to New York City at least twice a year for shopping and Broadway shows.  In 2008, I had three clients in NYC and went there 12 or 14 times in one year - that was heaven!  This year has also been a great one for trips to NY.  I have been there three times so far and will be making one more trip there before the year ends.

There are a lot of great Broadway shows premiering this fall.  I wish I could see them all, but I am managing to pack in a lot of entertainment in a short amount of time!

If you're going to Broadway this Fall, please leave me a comment and let me know what you thought of this season's shows.  I want to hear from you!  My trip is still a couple months off and I cannot wait.  When I return from NYC, I'll let you know what I thought of the shows ... but until then, here's what I will be seeing with links to the show's websites!

In tribute to the holiday season, I will be seeing "A Christmas Story - The Musical."

How vain would I sound if I admitted that I am going to see the Broadway show Grace just because it has Paul Rudd and Michael Shannon in it?  Awhile back I saw "A Behanding in Spokane" just because it had Christopher Walken in it and I'll see any show with Alan Rickman in it - I don't care if it's "Alan Rickman reads the Yellow Pages."

Now I will say I am seeing "The Performers" DESPITE the fact that Henry Winkler stars as an aging porn star, not because of it!  I'm much more interested in seeing Cheyenne Jackson!

It seemed like for quite some time every movie I saw had actress Jessica Chastain in it.  If she wasn't so talented, I'd probably be sick of her by now.  But I'm not, so I am going to see her in "The Heiress."

Several years ago, I went to see Broadway Legend Patti LuPone in Sweeney Todd on Broadway.  I was crushed when I arrived at the theater and discovered that Patti was off that week and another actress was taking her place.  I did enjoy the absolutely exquisite Michael Cerveris in the Sweeney Todd role, so it was not a total loss.  But I feel like Patti LuPone owes me a good night of theater, so I am going to see her and Debra Winger in "The Anarchist."  If Patti is on vacation when I go, I am going to make like the character of Jack in "Will and Grace" and try to give Patti LuPone a hair cut!

Years ago, I took my baby sister on her first ever trip to New York City.  She was around 12 years old at the time and we picked Broadway shows more suitable for her age - "The Lion King" and "Wicked."  While I did not see Kristen Chenowith in the version I saw, I did get the extreme pleasure of seeing the uber-fantastic Idina Menzel play Elphaba on Broadway.  Idina Menzel is performing a show in Tampa Bay at the Straz Performing Arts Center on Saturday, December 1, 2012.  My friend LM and I are going to the show.  When I heard LM had not seen the show "Wicked," I immediately insisted that we needed to see one of the touring January 2013 performances of it at the Straz Center so she could experience it.

As I researched shows to see in New York City, I discovered that once a month the Broadway show Wicked does a behind the scenes tour called "Wicked-Behind the Emerald Curtain."  I decided I absolutely needed to see this tour/show so that I could annoy the heck out of LM with Wicked trivia during both the Idina Menzel Tampa performance and the Wicked in Tampa performance.  (This is called friendship!)

Last but not least on my whirlwind Broadway NYC trip, I will be seeing the former Mrs. Tom Cruise herself - Katie Holmes in "Dead Accounts."  I have seen her co-star Norbert Leo Butz in several Broadway shows and am looking forward to the performance.  I expect that Suri Cruise will ask me out to tea at Alice's Tea Cup after the show.  I am a worldwide superstar after all.

The last time I was in NYC, the news of the Cruise-Holmes divorce had first hit the news media.  I saw throngs of paparazzi staking out buildings.  My friends guessed that these might be possible Katie Holmes stake-outs.  I took a picture of one group of paparazzi and a photographer amusedly said "Hey, she just took our picture!"  Yep, see how it feels!

I am very excited for my late Fall NYC vacation.  What vacations do you have coming up this holiday season?  Leave me a comment below!

  1. I'll be in New York, kitty-sitting in a Harlem apartment, from Nov. 16-26. Not an optimal week for booking the best prices on shows, but I'll stand in the TkTS line as long as it's drama, not musical. Other methods of buying cheap seats would be much appreciated. Also, suggestions for shows that my 20-something music snob son might be willing to endure.

  2. Kimiye - try AudienceRewards.com for discounts or specials on Broadway shows. My Google Ads also recommend Goldstar.com but I don't know it. 20-something music snob son -- hmmm, Once or Rock of Ages?

  3. Thanks! I suggested Once, but DS says Book of Mormon! South Park, y'know. Had to explain that either show might be sold out/too expensive. But I'll give it a try.

  4. I saw Book of Mormon on Broadway over this past July 4th weekend - it was uber-fantabulous-- now I truly understand why the fast sell outs and the high ticket prices. It was the ONLY Broadway show where I sat in the upper upper mezzanine (havent had such bad seats on Broadway in 10 years since I am a seat snob)-- and yet the show was worth it - even from such "great heights" (wasnt the back row but I was close enough to touch it!)

  5. This is all good and fine, but, what was the Fabulous Nicky G doing? that's what the readers really want to know ...
